How it works

The file is decoded to raw samples, each channel's array is reversed, and the result is encoded to the format you pick. There is no processing beyond the reversal — no filtering, no gain change, no resampling. Reverse the output again and you get the original back, sample for sample, apart from whatever the lossy encoder does on the round trip.

Why reversed audio sounds so strange

Almost every natural sound has a sharp attack and a slow decay: a struck string, a hit drum, a plucked note, a consonant. Reversal swaps those, giving a slow swell into an abrupt stop, which is a shape the physical world almost never produces. That is the whole effect — your ear is hearing an envelope that could not have happened in a room.

It is also why reversal is so much more dramatic on percussion and piano than on sustained sounds. A held organ note or a pad reversed sounds nearly identical to the original, because there was no attack to move to the other end.

Getting the reverse-reverb effect

The classic production trick needs three steps and this tool does two of them. Reverse the source here, add reverb to the reversed file in a DAW like Ableton, Logic, Reaper or Audacity, bounce that, then reverse the result again here. The reverb tail, having been created on backwards audio, now runs forwards into the note instead of trailing away from it.

Doing it without a DAW is not possible on this site — there is no reverb tool here, deliberately, because a convincing reverb needs impulse responses and a mixing context that a single-purpose page cannot give you.

Practical notes

Cut before you reverse, not after. Finding the right region is far easier on audio that still sounds like itself, so take the slice with the cutter first and reverse the clip. Choose WAV if the result is going into a sampler or a DAW, since you will almost certainly process it again and a lossy intermediate is a needless generation of loss.

A reversed file often peaks differently from the original once it has been through a lossy encoder, so if you are lining it up against other material, run normalize afterwards to put it back on a known ceiling.
